José Antonio Berenguer is a Scientific Researcher at the Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean and Near East of the Spanish National Research Council. His research work focuses on two main areas: Greek and Indo-European Linguistics and Greek Lexicography.
He worked on the team of the Greek-Spanish Dictionary (DGE) continuously from his graduation to 2014. Initially with various grants and collaboration contracts, and since June 2001, when he obtained a position as a CSIC Tenured Researcher, as one of its main authors (in volume VI, published in 2002; in the second edition of volume I —of which he was the responsible and main author—, published in 2008; as well as in volume VII, published in 2009, and in volume VIII, published in 2019).
In the fields of Indo-European and Greek Linguistics, his work has focused on the reconstruction of the Indo-European linguistic system or some of its derived languages. He has concentrated especially on the analysis of various linguistic phenomena of ancient Greek in different stages (from Homeric Greek to the Koine Greek attested in documentary papyri). Since 2014, when he ceased his participation in the DGE project, he has continuously directed various projects with competitive funding on Greek linguistics, papyrology, lexicography, and digital humanities, which have resulted in scientific publications in all these fields.
Based on his work and experience, he has sought to promote a new line of research dedicated to the study of the ancient Greek language using new digital technologies. To this end, he created in 2018 the Group of Greek Linguistics (GLG). (https://glg.csic.es/).
From 2011 to 2019, he held various management and scientific leadership positions at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC):
• Scientific Coordinator of the Humanities and Social Sciences Area (2014-2019).
• Director of the Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean and Near East (2011-2014).
• Director of the Center for Human and Social Sciences (2013-2014).
• Vice-Director of the Center for Human and Social Sciences (2012-2013).
He has been named an honorary member of the Spanish Society of Linguistics, of which he served as President from 2011 to 2015 (Vice-President from 2007 to 2010 and a member of the Directive Board from 2001 to 2004). He is a member of the Spanish Society of Classical Studies.
He is currently a member of the Editorial Board of Emerita. Journal of Classical Linguistics and Philology (since 2001; Scientific Editor from 2008 to 2012), and a member of the Editorial Board of the Manuales y Anejos de Emerita series (since 2006; Scientific Editor from 2006 to 2015). He is a member of the Honorary Committee of the Revista Española de Lingüística, of which he was successively a member of the Editorial Board (from 2001 to 2018), Scientific Editor (from 2001 to 2008) and a member of its Advisory Board (2019-2020). He has also been a member of the Editorial Board of the Manuales y Anejos del Diccionario Griego-Español series (from 2006 to 2019).
