Gaitán Salinas

Carmen Gaitán Salinas holds the position of Tenured Researcher in the Department of Art History and Heritage at the Institute of History of the CSIC. In this capacity, she conducts research in the realm of contemporary art and gender studies. She obtained her doctorate with honors from the Official Joint Program in Contemporary History. Her excellent doctoral work earned her the Outstanding Doctorate Award and a European Doctor Mention. Her doctoral thesis in art history was published by Cátedra under the title “Las artistas del exilio republicano español. El refugio latinoamericano” (2019), a book that was recognized with a “Publication Grant” from the Ministry of Culture in 2018.

In addition to her academic achievements, she holds a Higher Music Degree in Piano from the Superior Conservatory of Music in Málaga, as well as a Professional Music Degree in Clavichord from the Federico Moreno Torroba Integrated Center for Musical Studies in Madrid. She also serves as the director of "Culture, Art, and Gender. A permanent research seminar on alternative histories”.

At present, she oversees several research projects. Among them are “Women as Cultural Producers: Artistic Transatlantic Connections and Exchanges in the 20th Century” (PGC, MCIN-AEI, Ref: PID2022-142633OA-I00), “Transatlantic Female Artists. Identities and Creativity between Spain and Latin America in the 20th Century from a Feminist Perspective” (Ministry of Equality-Institute of Women, ref. 52-1-ID22), and “Between Pigments and Music: Plasticity, Sound, and Gender in Contemporary Art” (CSIC Incentive Program-I3 Program, Ref: 202210I078).

Her portfolio includes several notable publications. These encompass the critical edition, complete with introduction and notes, of “Mis días en México. Diarios (1939-1953)” by Manuela Ballester, as well as the co-edition of “Mi vida. Sucedió, El Rastro. Vida de lo inanimado y Así es” (3 vols.) by Victorina Durán. These achievements are complemented by numerous contributions to reputable indexed journals such as “Archivo Español de Arte,” “Goya. Revista de Arte,” “Anales de la Literatura Española Contemporánea,” and other prominent scientific dissemination platforms.

Throughout her academic journey, she has undertaken research residencies at esteemed institutions including New York University, where she served as a Visiting Scholar. She has also engaged with institutions like the National Gallery of Art (USA), El Colegio de México (Mexico), Universidad Nacional Tres de Febrero (Argentina), the University of Exeter (England), the University of Barcelona, the University of Pennsylvania, and Villanova University. Her teaching experience extends not only to the latter two universities in the United States but also includes the Complutense University of Madrid.

Furthermore, she takes on the role of editor for the articles section of “Enclaves. Revista de literatura, música y artes escénicas,” under the auspices of the University of Seville. Simultaneously, she serves as secretary of the journal “Archivo Español de Arte,” and is an active member of its Editorial Board. She also contributes as an evaluator for numerous scientific journals and selection processes. Additionally, she serves as a member of the Expert Committee of the Research and Documentation Center for Basque Women Artists, Feminist Art Practices, and Theories of Art.
